Well OP, they can't take money from you that you don't have. If they try to come after you for additional damages due to injury and its for an amount you simply cannot pay your only choice is to tell them sorry but fuck off. At that point they will probably send the bill to collections where they will try to ruin your credit at which point you could file for bankruptcy which will stay on your credit report for 7 to 10 years.
You could hire a lawyer in order to disprove the medical claim being made, however lawyers are not free and they are expensive plus you might still lose the case and have to pay.
Personally, I would take it on the chin. Start off with paying back that $2800. If they come at you with additional injury damages, see how much it is they want. If its some crazy amount like in the tens of thousands of dollar, then I would consider getting a lawyer to fight it.

Its a legit debt, and in all honesty, not that much in the grand scheme of things.
If OP doesn't pay, they will do as you said. And it will severely impact his credit, especially so with him being young and in college with little to no credit history.
Not a good way to start out your adult life and that $2800 will cost your far more in terms of loan/credit card/auto loan denials, rental denials, even cell phone denials.
And once in collections, they are very smart about eventually getting paid. In 5 years the debt could come back to haunt him if he were to buy a house or have some real assets.
While its true you cant get blood out of a rock, this isnt that. Someone with a 4 year degree will eventually have to deal with this. The folks at the local trailer park might get away with it but people like that dont give a fuck in the first place and like in squalor.
