BMW reliability

How reliable are BMW's?

I've always wanted to own one since they seem like they're focused on being drivers cars, but people have told me that they're over complicated and break down a lot. I've also been told that they're only unreliable if you don't maintain them.
If I do end up buying one it will be either an M2/M3 or a 6 cylinder 3 or 5 series model

Better than Volkswagen, but still a german car so expect to pay thousands of thousands of dollars on car repairs and maintenance.

speaking from hearsay only as i've never owned one, but it seems from testimony that the cooling systems are the single biggest liability of modern BMWs.

OP here, I live in Australia for reference, so German cars are pricey to buy here compared to in Europe.

Id say its the most reliable out of the germans, but that doesnt mean much

Are they really that expensive to own? All I've ever had before are Australian built Fords and Holdens, which are extremely cheap to fix and maintain.

They are shit

new m2 is cheap to own.
how good the reliabilty is we’ll only find out in 10 years

Dacia Duster is much much better

Depends if it has a turbo or not.

So basically what we've learnt is don't by a BMW with a turbo if you drive like a potato, can't maintain it, don't use premium fuel or have a turbo from the eighties.
I wasted three and a half minutes on this nothing video.

Welcome to the Scotty Kilmer channel.

avoid the automatics

I own a 2015 Z4 with the N54. It's actually been very reliable

Every bmw with turbo charger and direct injection gets massive problems with these components after 5+ years.

depends on the model
most 7 series are garbage
1 and 2 series are usually good
5 series is a total mixed bag, before e60, they're fine otherwise avoid
6 series = 5 series
3 series is completely up in the air. Avoid 4 cylinder models (there's a reason bmw is known for their i6)

I wouldn't want to own one too far out of warranty, but that's true of any luxury brand. Under 150k miles or ten years with all the maintenance done correctly and on time BMWs better than average. It's when components start to age or electrical gremlins crop up that things can get expensive in a hurry because all repairs are expensive on these cars.

I have an out-of-warranty F22.
The windshield wiper fluid pump failed at around 49,900 miles. I have a $12 replacement pump sitting next to me because I'm waiting on some related replacement parts to come in. We'll see if it's an electrical problem if the replacement pump doesn't fix the issue.
There's a rattle coming from some of the air vents when you've just started driving on a cold day and the heat is on.
That's as far as I've gotten with this 2014 bmw.

wow such an unreliable shitheap. get rid of it asap

do I replace it with a dacia?

How about the 128i? I've been seeing some really good examples at a decent price.

great car, but make sure to change the tires from run flats to something non shit

Bmw are reliable is that when something breaks the part and labor is more because of german engineering most people don't even bother and scrap em or sell them

What does Veeky Forums think of the F30, F32, F36, and F22?
I heard the only downsides were that they suffered from more small electronics issues than previous gens.

Thanks man, every review has said the same.

They are reliable if maintained. They can be expensive to own, especially if not. Parts can be pricey and dealership will rape you on repairs. Get an M or go home.
> dd an e46 m3

new ones blow. there's a 2mm thick gasket separating the coolant from the oil. All of them go, eventually totalling your entire cooling system, sometimes you engine too.

Older OBD1 varients are bulletproof, especially the 3.5 engines. I've seen them lose compression at like 400k+ miles, but both me and a bunch of the BMW guys I know over here have never seen that engine blow.

I posted about my F22 already, but I'll share some general quirks and features while abusing greentext.
>no oil dipstick.
>no oil temp gauge because they needed space for a useless battery level indicator
>rear seats are too comfortable for rear passengers
>no roof-handle for front passenger to grab so they always grab the door-closing handle(separate from the opening handle)
>no way to access the trunk if the battery dies.
You have to connect power to the front jumping locations in order to open the electric-only trunk latch. I have to keep my battery jump starter under my seat just in case it ever happens. The emergency inside-trunk latch is mechanical but that doesn't matter.
>air hose connector clips are all shitty plastic and I've already broken two
>anti-roll bar ties are made of plastic
>engine auto-off feature is on by default so you have to code it out.
But apparently a lot of dealers code it out the instant they get the car shipment and you never even know about it.
>N55 doesn't sound great. Exhaust note isn't good enough to like.
>panel gaps

The 128i is for people that forgot the 135i was a thing.

I have a 2010 520d. So far the PDC has taken a shit, the airbags have failed, the navi only works for about an hour before the dvd player stops reading the maps, and the wiring to the rear hatch had to be redone, and one of the xenon headlights is starting to go.

Otherwise mechanically it is fine... but the 2.0L diesel in my car is notorious for lunching its timing chain.

So.... not that reliable in my case.

>e46 m3

That is a about as meme as a 3k civic

Fuck you

>too comfortable for rear passengers
What do you mean by this? Are the seats too cushy or does it actually have enough room to fit 2 human adults?

Don't really care about the turbos and added complexity. To each their own.

Pretty sure the automatic trannies are trash on bimmers

>"added complexity"
Uwotm8?

I also have an N54. Its a great engine.

The water pump is shit and everyone knows it and the turbos ineveitably fail but the water pump is $600 and the turbos, why not get a dinan when that day comes?

The N54 platform is well known and there are many many options for it and fixing it. I Think its great and I love mine.

problem is, nobody can afford new bmws so they buy pre-owned 7-year old cars that prime for repairs so they think theyre "unreliable and expensive to own"

How reliable is the N52 engine? Thinking about getting a Z4 coupe 3.0si in the near future.

>7 years
Try 14. That’s the average age of BMW’s around here driven by people that live in social housing or with their parents

Except when you've owned multiple cars for more than 7 years that still have no problems.

people at back get sea sick
