just rent whatever heroes you feel like playing and use the rest on backpacks, I wouldn't be afraid to rent to many; you build favor really quickly

Over ~20 levels I've only rolled 2 champions out of loot boxes, 1 was a reliquary, the other was a chest. I mostly only get Runes from backpacks, so I wouldn't say backpacks are cost effective at all.

You really only build favor quickly with rune challenges, and those are going to be difficult to even acquire for a free player. It's going to feel a lot slower for someone who only has Ranger, especially if they don't exactly like him.
