C++ > all

first for java!

No so much expecting retro physics, or physics at all, but Unity's 2D support is very geared towards a specific set of games, and for other games you generally need to lay down your own foundation out of what pieces they have for you

...

Godot.

Reminder that if this isn't your design philosophy you are doomed to fail:

godotengine.org/article/how-actually-make-your-dream-game

I'm still waiting.

that is one lazy DD group pic

it's lazy because it's not over yet

Various Engines Pros and Cons.

>Unity
+ Big user base
+Loads of tutorials and documentation
- Shitty shaders
- Asset store games
- Low respect points

>Godot
+Absolutely free, as free as is possible
+Great 2D engine
-Almost no documentation
-Almost no tutorials or user base
-3D is absolute shit

>GMS
+Huge user base
+Shittons of tutorials and documentation
+Lots of hit games
-Very outdated
-Costs money, and then more money to export.
-UI is still garbage in GMS2

>UE4
+BEAUTIFUL
-Asset store
-Blueprints
-Needs a team to be efficient (or deep wallets for the asset store)

Reasonable advice. Honestly, though, "manage your scope" is more about "Don't try to compete with Bethesda or CDPR as a 1MA you will die" rather than "Make only pong and mobile games".

Although if your dream game is a mobile game, that's kinda sad.

yes that is definitely true. I just find customizing Unity far easier than stuff like RPGMaker or Gamemaker for instance. So if something is lacking or missing it is easy to implement myself.

>Dream is a Mobile Game
>Some guy made Flappy Bird in 5 minutes
>Becomes rich as fuck over night

Yeah what a horrible dream to have.

What's wrong with Unity's 2D physics? I've never touched it myself and this is the first I've seen someone bring it up.

>blueprints
>cons

Whew, finished the demo with an hour to spare!

Please download and tell me what you think. I let my brother play it and he hates the camera and thinks it should be player controlled when you hold down the middle mouse button, but I'd like some more opinions

itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-16/rate/174957

>Needs a team to be efficient (or deep wallets for the asset store)
What are you taking about? UE4 has a really fast workflow and there's no way you're going to be bottlenecked by it unless you just can't handle visual scripting. Just like Unity, your primary bottleneck, once you're comfortable with it, will be motivation.

its built around Box2D which is realistic physics. So if you want to do any simple 2D video game physics it is up to you to make sure the default behavior of stuff is what it should be.

What's the difference between game maker 2 and game maker 1

1

>tfw going through old dead abandoned dev
what hurts more?
is it the broken dreams
or the wasted time

Lol your delusional if you think GMS has a better completed product track record than Unity.

>itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-16/rate/174957
and to think I had almost forgotten...

DLing now

>Go to gamedev board on popular alien site sub
>First page is all people talking about how to screw customers
>How to lock basic shit behind paywalls
>How to make money with mobile games

Cancer.

>Godot has a low userbase and almost no tutorials
Just because i wanted to use it
Is Unity good for 2D games?

Should I get godot 2 or the incomplete 3? Also how do i get 3?

It's more like if the game you want to create is Skyrim, prototype it and let your experience in development determine how close to Skyrim you can get.

GMS 1.4 Studio is polished, has some workflow issues.

GMS 2 tried to make the workflow better. They did. They also ruined GMS. There are little to no changes in how the engine itself works, but now some stuff is broken, most people are still using 1.4 as the cost to upgrade isn't worth it at all, even with the discount 1.4 buyers have.

No.

It put both versions in the rar for some reason, you want to play the 0.01 version

I went deep in my old hard drive for some old code I haven't used in a long time. I found the first ever animation I did and felt proud how far I got since then.

What exactly is ruined about GM2

I don't think he mentioned anything about that.
Projecting much?

There's no wasted time when you're learning something.

but it's the wasted time

- Asset store games
- Low respect points

+Lots of hit games

hmmmm really makes you think

Sorry I fucked up with the rar and put two different versions in, the proper one is there now

GMS seems to have a good track record of 1MA games that make a million or more.

Unity is terrible for 2D games. It doesn't use a 2D engine. It uses it's 3D engine forced into a 2D perspective. That is absolutely horseshit and I shouldn't have to explain why.

Imagine buying a phone, and then 6 years later they release the next version, but it's the same phone with a different launcher and the camera isn't as good.

you forgot to add:

>Unity
+ works with integrated graphics

>UE4
-requires dedicated GPU

if that weren't the case I'd be using UE4....

I'm going to make one in unity anyway. fite me.

>proud how far I got since then
yea that's also true i get that looking at my first 3D models
still hate remembering i spent months on things i just dropped

How did you get "GMS has more completed games than Unity does" from that?
Are you autistic?

not quite my critique, but Box2D is for a certain type of games. Other than that, there really isn't 2D support in Unity. You can't even change the axises for 2D

Mild disappointment = program ruined?

how do you get that from what i said ? are you autistic ? learn what better completed product track record means.

>First attempt was the cutest
>the harder you try, the worse it gets

...

>give thing kirby eyes
>"it's cute now!"
I hate how people underestimate cuteness.
It's not that easy.

You've all forced my hand.
It's pretty WIP right now and it completely borks controllers but I'm finally getting to this after all the feedback.

>6 YEARS later
>Product is the same, even slightly worse
>Buy it anyway

Boy I sure am mildly disappointed.

You have to be trying to be as retarded as possible.

it is cute though

i just wanted to make these 3D ;_;
transferring cute 2D into cute 3D is harder than it looks
if it was anime would be 100% 3dcg by now

jesus ive been playing 0.1 because that would... you know... be the newer one usually ><
ok it was a fuck up. That's ok, user

what does that even mean ? change the axises ? you can position the object anyway you want in 2D space, rotate it, flip it, etc. what more could you want without getting into 2.5D games ?

i was gonna use gms for my 2d game, but i can make 8bit sounding musics with onaudiofilterread and rendertexures are a good substitute for surfaces which is really the only thing gms has going for it

Should upload this so I can finally enjoy your game

No it's fucking not
It's literally a penis with kirby eyes and :3 stuck on it

Get 2. 3 is still lacking in documentation.

Godot is easy as fuck and the basic tutorial on their website is pretty good. You only run into documentation limitations if you want to do certain advanced things (I guess they assume you'll just peek the source code) but then google can usually help.

>Want to be enginedev
>Want to hold it over peoples heads
>Realize Godot is completely open source
>Modify engine enough to where it looks like an original work by me
>Pass it off to fledgling game makers as a top secret game engine

I'm gonna be rollin' in it bros.

qt. maybe just make them 3d but have them mostly be blobs with 2d faces? not sure. 3d blush is certainly weird imo, and =3 mouth would be an indent not a protrusion.

I think u can do it user. also probably some kind of cel shading instead of such a harsh light would have made him look better. (i get that it was just a sample render)

It breaks controllers right now and the only way to change the binds without breaking everything is by editing the .ini, so if I do it'll be in a few days.

Just fork it.

Just gonna shill my demo day entry
itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-16/rate/174917

Breed CATS

;_;
i thought it was cute until someone told me it looked like a penis and the design has been completely ruined ever since
i need to redesign it's shape completely
it's just the shape is really good for the games i want to make for it
this is why slow spent so much time remaking his chicken a billion times
cute is haaard

What do I need to learn to master graphics?

Taking programming courses and so far it's going a bit slow, I want a head start in any math or concept I need to start googling for so I can start practicing drawing and manipulating graphics

It is indeed hard.
Good lick on making your penis cute, man.

>Its scripting language, called GDScript and is similar to Python.

the first thing you should do is make the scripting with an established C-like language like C++,C#, or Java.

>someone told me it looked like a penis
he's not wrong

the failure screen is cutest part with that animation
i dont know why people be hatin

no clue. all the courses and books i have gone through that were programming related none of the content had anything to do with low level graphics programming.

the 3d blush makes it unique and stylish and gives it that cool weird japan feeling

i don't think you have to change him dramatically to make it work.

its cute, it just needs to be improved even more. keep at it, you'll figure it out.

Hey, I just made it into the demo day. I haven't been posting much, but I have been devving a lot. Working and devving is really hard but I'm going to finish this game if it kills me.

Unity documentation is not a plus

>asset store
Please don't tell me you anons give into this shit

it could work, but execution or rendering needs to be improved i think.

So Godot 3 is implementing visual scripting

github.com/godotengine/godot-docs/blob/master/learning/scripting/visual_script/visual_script_basics.rst#creating-a-script

I'm gonna start being a 2d game dev. I have GMS Studio pro license from an old Humble Bundle.

Godot or GMS 1.4?

why not try making the game in both at the same time ?

th-thanks!
I'll just keep at it, it's good that some people seem to get it and see my original vision even through the flaws.
I was considering just doing whatever it takes to make the promo materials look good, if that's making the proportions more realistic different from the ingame models then whatever.
People seem to respond well to the ingame models especially when animated in motion but don't like still shots of the promo models.
I was also thinking maybe it's not so bad it has a controversial shape sometimes?
It makes it memorable and maybe the flaws can grow on the audience to make it unique and distinguishable from other cute characters.
dunno just gotta get back on the cute grind

is tearing apart existing scripts a good way to learn?

Defend this : youtube.com/watch?v=S6jqR7wmnw4

it only looks like a little chode if I'm trying to see it that way

yup very

>if only god didn't make penises look the way they do you could keep your character the way it looks
life is cruel

>Be completely new to programming
>Never programmed a day in my life
>Pick up Godot, do a basic Python tutorial online
>Do one Godot tutorial
>GDScript master in one week

I love this shit. I thought maybe I could do this with C++ BUT LOL. No way. I love Godot now and will not be using C# AT ALL.

what icon do you guys think better represents arousal

Little penises.

The way he does it is really stupid.
It's much, much easier to do it the way KidsCanCode shows you, takes maybe 3 minutes to do.
The guy that writes those always knows absolutely nothing about Godot and shows his stupid long-way-around way to do things when the tools are there that make it much easier.

nice video.

Yeah just make sure you fiddle around with them so you see what exactly is being effected

Why are you selling yourself short ? Python is harder to program with than C#.

Same here, was looking at my first pc's hdd and found my first projects and and old sprite edits I did. I was kinda dissapointed on how old me planned a lot a did very little, but also felt good about how much I have learned and improved since then.
I even feel tempted to take one of those old projects and remake it into something decent.

I just wanted to say this. I was just looking up his video.
youtube.com/watch?v=LBK5GgMB988

Oh you wanted me to google it for you?
No.

Working on a subweapon

neither
the one on the left looks like fiery rage/maniacal evil
the one on the right looks like sadness, like love draining out of a heart. or some sort of vampire effect

The way they do it on the official site is simple enough.

The GDquest guy is alright too, even though sometimes his shit is a little overcomplicated.

>Python
>Harder than C#

top kek x100
GDScript will always be better than using C# in Godot. It's being implemented for morons who can't be bothered to learn GDScript in 5 minutes.

interesting take
i thought 2 intertwined hearts with one dripping wet was a little on the nose
ill keep thinking i guess
