Trade routes in Skyrim make no fucking sense.

There isn't a single fucking reason why Whiterun would be the "center of trade" in Skyrim. Its central location? It means dick. Ever look at historic trading centers of the world? 95% are port cities on a coast, the remaining 5% are river ports. Being in the middle of a large landmass doesn't make you its trade hub it makes you its backwater. Just to the West there's a heavily fortified settlement literally called Robbers Gorge that would make trade with Solitude damn near impossible, not that it matters becasue roads don't really matter.

Skyrim has this modern idea of how economics and transportation works. The fact that Whiterun has roads to it or that Falkreath is so geographically close to Cyrodiil means exactly dick. Falkreath wouldn't be heavily influenced by the Empire. it probably wouldn't even trade with it directly. There's a huge mountain range in the way and raiding mountain/forest roads is piss easy if you're a bandit. Pinewatch is a great example of this. If you trade at all you float shit down the river to Windhelm and from there to every port in Tamriel...Or you would if there weren't several big waterfalls in the god damned way and the damn river didn't shrink to knee deep water at some points.

At the very least Whiterun could potentially be a trading hub with some minor tweeks. If lake Ilinalta were to drain into the Karth River as well as the White river and lake Ilinalta connected somehow to lake Geir it would mean that Whiterun would effectively have a choke point on the river system and trade with all of southern Skyrim. As it stands though both Whiterun and Falkreath would be backwaters and so would for that matter be...

Why in the shit does this place have a history of trade and riches? Especially with fucking Morrowind of all places. This fucking town that not an hours run away has a humongous castle plopped right ON THE ROAD teeming with bandits at one point in its history had some overland trade routes through the mountains into Morrowind? Fuck you, you're insane. The area would be full of tiny villages and farming communities with no history of great riches because it has no way of getting riches in or out. Those waterfalls near Ivarstead and Nilheim are enormous and the river system it connects to is only barely navigable anyway. Even if you attempted to portage a ship, OOPS! The roads you would use for that are crappy and poorly maintained not too mention too narrow and steep.

Having to travel through the bandit filled Fort Greenwall and onto Shor's Stone just to navigate my way through mountain roads filled with wolves and bears is not my idea of a safe trip when I'm pulling a handcart filled with Sujamma and Flin to the port of Windhelm....and act that itself makes no goddamn sense since Morrowind would be the natural trading partner of Windhelm anyway. It's literally right fucking there. You could probably get to Blacklight from Windhelm faster than you could get from Falkreath to Helgen. Which brings me to...

Markarth is another mystery.

It sits on the ass end of a shitty river system that cuts through the Reach, a land filled with Forsworn that constantly attack anything that doesn't share their taste in shitty facial tatoos. This place is supposed to be rich? It should be a glorified fortress with next to no civilians not the capital of a hold. 90% of the population should be either soldiers or workers with the remaining 10% being researchers studying the Dwarven ruins. The only thing coming out of the Markarth should be heavily defended river barges filled with silver that pass under heavily fortified bridges. Karthwasten should be the capital occupying the only riverside plateau of arable land in an hold filled to the ass with Rocks.

Windhelm and maybe to a lesser extent Solitude should be the trading hubs of Skyrim. Windhelm is at the mouth of an extensive river system that shit as it may be can still at the very least exploit lumber from the interior and help transport its goods to the rest of Skyrim. Solitude would get silver from Markarth and crops from Karthwasten and Morthal but more importantly is much closer to High Rock ports while Windhelm's closest trading partner, Morrowind, is an ash filled shithole after the Red Year. I guess they could trade with Argonians but half their shit is poisonous.

Any of Vicn's. Vigilant is probably the best by far. Unslaad is good, but short. Clockwork is pretty cool and you get a cool house. I'm playing Beyond Reach right now. I last played it shortly after it was released. Other than some of the voices being kinda crappy it's not too bad.
