If you take the known locations on the map, and stretch them out over the real world map, its pretty evident that, based on Necropolis's location in Fallout 1, Shady Sands, V15, and !3 were all located in Nevada, or in V13's case right on the border.

In my game, this actually occured (random encounter, urban ruins rat horde).

Not who you are replying to, but that region in FO1's map is definitely urban ruins and the game treats it as such. And going by the geographical topography of the in-game FO1 map, you could easily derive that non-POI urban area to be the Vegas metropolitan area. V13-15-Shady line was really far east in the original game, the change in FO2 made much more sense (although Vault City is still in a fucked up spot in the middle of literal nowhere). Sure, the map is distorted (especially east-west scale), but the basic geographical features are pretty noticable.

The Divide is mixed on where it is exactly. I think it's around the Nopah range, around the small towns of Shoshone and Tecopa; it's an area with state highway junctions, near Death Valley. It could also refer to Death Valley itself; basically the Divide quick rundown, is it's fucked up the usable travel routes in the whole Death Valley region.

The AI meme is a shitty one.

For example, the "AI" used in FEAR 1, a game often considered to have some of the best enemy AI in a video game, even today, is actually the same stock set of AI scripts used in basically everything else around that time.

What made FEAR 1's AI seem so good was the fact that ever level was pretty linear, which meant they could very carefully craft every single encounter with small thing that would FORCE the enemy AI to do thinks that made it seem like they were trying to flush you out with grenades, or were flanking you, but, in reality, they were just done the one thing they could do.

Open world games tend to have pretty shit AI because them being open world means lots of space, which means not a lot of shit for the enemy to interact with, with is why, even to this day, most enemies in open world games just charge the shit out of you.

It's not a matter of AI as it is a matter of open world game design being shit for enemy "AI" because enemy "AI" isn't actually AI, it's just a series of conditional script triggers, that most of the time never get trigger because of open spaces.

Look, I'm no programmer but there has to be a way to make the AI use cover more effectively. The AI does take cover in F4, but half the time half their body is sticking out. You can take potshots at their asses and they won't return fire.

Another way to address this is just make enemies spawn in more advantageous positions like rooftops. Of course, this was again in F4, but those enemies still just ran down to you instead of firing from their sniper positions. Is it really that hard to make the AI stand still in some spots?
