Ideally "Sonic Mania 2" wouldn't be called Sonic Mania 2 and would have all original zones. But if he had to have another Sonic game with remixed zones, then I'd want them to go for zones that no one would see coming, like game gear zones, 3D zones remade in 2D, Advance/Rush zones remade in Genesis style, zones from spinoffs like Chaotix and 3D Blast, zones based on non-Sonic SEGA games (I'd kill for Curien Mansion Zone, Tokyo-to Zone, Fantasy Zone, etc.) all kinds of crazy shit.

I'd just change him so he has an active day of patrolling different universes and fixing problems, so him meeting Sonic isn't entirely contextual and he still has a less contrived way of reappearing in future games.

Play up his naivete and inexperience to be a little more like his Archie counterpart, make him an ally to Sonic and if he ever tries to fight Sonic then it needs to be established that he has a very plausible reason for believing Sonic is the bad guy he's supposed to be chasing.
