It's the least bad among all the commonly used H-game engines from the technical point of view (high resolution, locale-independent, support of modern hardware). It's precisely because of the japs not wanting my money in the first place I can't expect them to learn the programming properly. Moving to Unity will force them to keep up with the technical progress at the very least, and I can deal with having to MTL their shit after that just like I'm dealing with that and even more of the related bullshit right now.

If they really wanted to move on something more complex they would have done it a while ago, people using rpgmakers or any similar programs have little interest to learn more and in the end it will probably sell just as much.

The thing is, there were no alternatives to switch to even if they wanted. Just like on the doujin VN side it's still either Kirikiri or (god forbid) Nscripter, on HRPG side it's still RPG Maker or Wolf or go code your own crappy engine yourself. Non-RPGs have (thankfully dying) Flash in there.
Now there's Unity for what it's worth, and us gaijin in particular will benefit from it.
