Rugrats here, usually I stay out of discussions about my AU, but I feel it's only fair to admit that the inconsistent technology seen with the Toy bots is due to my own inexperience with drawing back then. Drawing the toys in full detail and accuracy was something that I felt was too tough for my skill at the time, so I just made them "close enough" and more cartoony. The same went for the main 4's withered forms. Their toy's ability to eat, drink, smoke, and etc. was something that I did for humor without realizing that it opened up a plot hole.

I once had an idea for a comic where it would be explained that all of their quirks were intentionally designed as prototypes for the tech found in the main bots in the future: TC was an experiment in self-awareness, TF was an experiment in digesting and metabolizing organic substances, Mangle was several experiments at once including inducing crazy intrusive thoughts within artificial intelligence, and TB was just plain gay, that was going to be the joke all along. But it never got made because I didn't know how to work it in at the time. Although I may make it some day in the future. Time will tell.

tldr; They are intentionally future-y, but they weren't supposed to seem so advanced that they look like the present versions of the bots - that was all due to poorly thought-out design decisions on my part.

You play as one of the robots but every night you're hallucinating some of the kid's memories from childhood as they're playing hide and seek until you get caught and the guard closes the door if you're not fast enough. At that point the vision becomes twisted and glitchy (similar to observer but with youtube compression) with the rooms of the pizzeria and memories meshed together as you're attempting to go back to the stage without falling through one of the memory holes and shut down.
Repeat this every night until you catch the guard.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand FNAF. The lore is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of plot misdirection most of the plot will go over a typical player's head. There’s also Afton's fetishistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal fetishes draw heavily from Hajime Soriyama, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these plotlines, to realise that they’re not just scary- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike FNAF truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the epicness in Afton's existential catchphrase “She can even dispense ice cream,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Kira Buckley's latest literary masterwork. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Scott Cawthon's genius writing unfolds itself on their computer monitors. What fools... how I pity them.
