I had a 770 before my 970 and it was pretty comparable

The problem is with 50/60 cards is that they're just plain worse by about 20% compared to the 70 series, and its the same between 70/80, even though the 20% is much more noticeable

I'm tempted to go to AMD even if I had a bad experience the one time I did mid 2000s. I wouldn't mind the 20% difference compared to a 70 series if the price matches or if the 50-60 is noticeably superior to the current GPU. The 1060 6GB is if the price was proper MSRP 240-260. Instead it is usually inflated to 300-400 unless you get a gimped one fan version and even then it's 20-40 over MSRP. The price should drop down as it seems to be. Last I looked prior to today and nothing was available for under 300.

it's an upgrade, but not a huge one. Either splurge for a 1070/1080 or wait for new series to come and drop prices.
