First I want you to know exactly where I stand on crossbows. I'm in favor of a fortresswide ban on hunting and crossbows for civilians. The bookkeeper's fortress death statistics from 264 have shown that violent deaths by wildlife decreased by 60% plus over the last 3 years, in which we eliminated our dependence on hunting. I also want to require stockpiles to run mood checks on everyone that picks up a crossbow. And I want Mayor McObama to increase fortress funding for strange mood treatment for all dwarves who need it. I think these are perfectly reasonable steps to help this fortress begin to stop the tide of crossbow-related deaths, but not everybody agrees. In fact several crossbow advocates made some engravings in the meeting hall no less to have me atomsmashed for my views. Here's what happens when I sit down with one of the dwarves behind the engravings, Alex Jones.

Well this is a fun bit of emergent storytelling. I and my companion were being chased across the forest by this horrible monster thing (the big white S) and it looked like he was gonna catch up. I definitely couldn't outrun him forever. Luckily, I had two things in my favor: 1. I don't need to outrun the monster 2. My character is a total scumbag

Peasants, bee keepers, fisherdwarves... and sometimes even vampires. They are not sending us their best people, folks. But sure: Come right in. We are stupid. We'll take anyone. Currently cheese makers make up 7% of our population. If the current trends continue cheese makers will be a majority in 254... That also means they will have a majority of the vote in 254. This means a cheese maker major. And what do we do then? He will mandate the production of cheese, furthering the position of him and his ilk. He will also ban the export of any non-cheese related food products. How many will lose their jobs if we can't sell food anymore? Fortrexit now!

you can make a drain on the edge of the map by carving fortifications on edge tiles, or drain it into a cavern. hope your miners/pickaxes are safe though cause otherwise you're fucked

Evacuate dwarves to the surface, you moron. You started the fort with only seven dwarves, ten anvils and 200 bars of steel. You can rebuild it. In time, you can maybe drain your old fortress, but digging the drainage tunnels will take time, and you need to ensure your dwarves aren't drowning in the meantime.

I want to simply build a stair up a single level and dig there. Building an up stair is not giving dwarves access to the tile above it, so I can't make a down stair to connect them.
I see no difference in what I'm doing if I dig down without using U/D stairs, so I don't get it.

it's not rocket science. if you want the up stair to give you access to the floor above, you must also build a down stair on that floor, which connects to the upstair.

each z level also has a "floor" layer. stairs only dig to the floor layer and you need to put another one ontop or below to actually connect them through.
