Meme filenames aside, I think the diagonal version may work better with some designs (like this one honestly), while the vertical version may be better suited for others. I think it's a question of testing all possibilities, which is what I'll be doing now.

Yup. But you can also get a random event that gives you a free acquire state/conquest CB on a neighbouring nation, don't remember the requirements but I recall them being pretty easy to fulfil.
