Frost would be fine RP wise. Dried meat is very valuable and keeps the longest. You dry meat by hanging it off the ground during winter in cold climates. Lightning would be the least likely to ruin a pelt as lightning has a solitary entry and exit point with the exit point being into the ground (feet).
