Okay vitagen, just finished DRV3, and I can't say I appreciated the ending.

Seriously, an ambiguous ending is the worst. I don't care if you think a game about lies somehow gets a pass because "oh but X is a lie, interpret the ending as you please". The theme was to use lies to uncover the truth, and the ending is shit.

Hi there all, I'm here to sell you a game. It's an old one, but one that I feel doesn't get nearly enough credit for what it is. And that's sad, because it's a good game.

Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of Time was doomed to fail in the West. It was released in NA on PSP in 2012, well into the death spiral of the PSP. It has almost no advertisement, and an art style that hadn't been updated since it's original release in 2003, where it was already kind of unique. To no one's surprise, it sold poorly.

Which is a damn shame, because a lot of effort was put into making it a really good game. With more than 60 hours of gameplay, 3 routes and more than 30 endings, there's a lot to do. That's not even mentioning the huge number of non-party characters who's lives or deaths are decided by your choices.

While your MC is static in character design, the game gives a massive ability for you to customize his personality, and recognizes those changes. Act like a badass? The game will slowly remove the frightened conversations choices from dialogue, and replace them with badass ones. Flirt with every girl you meet? The game recognizes that you're heterosexual, and blocks homosexual-esque lines. Fuck up somewhere along the line? Go spend some vacation time with a therapist to correct your personality.

Gameplay is a lovechild of Baldur's Gate and Final Fantasy, with an open battlefield mixed with ATB that determine actions. The plot is probably the weakest area, being standard JRPG fare, but there's enough choices and optional events that you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

It's a really good JRPG, with far more meaningful freedom of choice than most WRPG's of today, solid battles and a well-fleshed out cast. Give it a look, even if you don't end up buying it.
