Just started playing CF, and it's the first fighter I've actually tried getting better at. What are some tips you guys got for me on learning the game? Right now I'm working on combos in training, and then trying to apply them in a match while predicting blocks better.

Don't waste too much time in training working on long difficult combos since you won't be able to pull them off in matches for a long time. Just learn some simple 3-5 hit combos with good enders off of your various starters and throw.

Play as many games as you can and learn how to defend, all the mechanics.

You don't always have to be pushing buttons in neutral. Pushing the wrong ones will get you killed.

Also, what's a fighter that's as close to Mai as possible? I have like one friend that plays this and he's getting mad that I'm stomping him with her.

Train as much as you can with friends or other people rather than the CPU, every so often practice mid and corner combos and you'll end up finding easy and eficient combos. As an user said learn how to block (The tutorial really helps as a refresher, and Dustloop have a little info for more specific things)
And there's not a character like Mai. A close thing is Lambda-11. She's easy, have projectails that cover good part of the screen, easy combos, and adds a little rushdown to the mix
