Seems like it will eventually be superior to the first game but there's no way it can compare in terms of content right now. Vortex was a dumb meme (armies teleport to your ritual cities ala R2 civil war), thankfully you can mod it so rituals for you or AI never happen. Game is also kinda buggy right now. Wait a while if you're interested.

I think the reason the vortex campaign is such a meme is really so that once ME comes out, the vortex can be relegated to a mini-campaign like the beastmen/elves. No reason to play it more than a handful of times, just an extra thing. If it was a normal campaign with no gimmick, nobody would touch it once ME is released.

Maybe that's just wrong though.

When I am defending in a siege battle, how should I be positioning my troops? Should I put just ranged units on the walls and have them retreat when the enemy gets close? Should I put melee units on the walls to intercept the enemy?

I'm new to total war.

Ranged units on walls until the enemy are right on top of them, then pull them back below while melee troops that you kept close by defend. Hold the walls/towers as long as you can so they can fire on the enemy.

I am learning to play and am so shit at this game. How can I hold a fucking line as the Empire? My swordsmen get beaten by anything. Do I need to spam spears?

You don't hold a line in this game because battles only last a few seconds

you need arty and range to kill these who are killing your swordsmen

State Troops, Flagellants and Greatswords are mostly there to form and hold a line while your handgunners, cavalry (Reiksguard and Demigryphs) and artillery do the majority of the killing.

The general rule is melee on the walls, ranged behind on the ground, fliers/monsters go out and harass if it's Warhammer, make sure something's watching the gates
Ranged can go on the walls if you can pull them all back before the enemy gets there

Make sure to support your swordsmen, and never let a lone unit take on more then one unit.
Spears are good if you are fighting cavalry and monsters, but swords are better against infantry.

There is roughly three melee units: anti-large, anti-infantry, and anti-armor. They are divided by tier.

Swordsmen are anti-infantry tier 1. They are absolutely shit, less shit against low tier infantry with low armor.

Spears are anti-large tier 1. They are absolutely shit, less shit against low tier large (horses, monsters, etc) with low armor.

Do what you must. If your frontline infantry isn't up to par, keep them and spam ranged. Ranged are also divided between anti-non-armor and anti-armor. Your anti-armor/anti-large are gunners. They are good at that. The rest is anti-infantry/low armor.

I've found my Warhammer 2 battles seem to last a bit longer, like 8-10 minutes. Still not long enough (I'd prefer around 15 for medium battles and 20 for huge battles), but its way better than Warhammer 1 where battles are like 5 minutes tops.

If you're playing as The Empire just make a line of Spearmen w/ Shields and Swordsmen and put Crossbowmen behind them

Ten second long battles are shit and I like being able to lose if I'm outnumbered 3 to 1.

Family tree was still present but not shown. Try killing/adopting all the guys from the other factions, or losing your own. The target faction will have a hard time getting new ones on the long run.
