Barges mine about twice as much as Ventures and nullsec ore can be worth about twice as much as highsec ore. Beyond that you're looking at Rorquals which can mine hundreds of millions of isk worth of ore an hour but require huge investments.

I am soon looking to get into exploration, but I heard that having a cloak is quite helpful, so I assume that, as an alpha, I will be forced to deal with hostiles, should I equip some weapons to try to clear out the area? or should I instead try to find a way to make my ships more durable so that I can just tank it until I'm done.
Also, should I start moving into lower sec to start?

Don't bother fitting weapons or tank to exploration frigates, even if you do you won't be able to kill or even survive against anything. Just fit for align speed. As for where to explore, nullsec is your best bet. High/low-sec exploration sites have far less valuable loot and half the sites you find in wormholes you won't be able to do due to NPCs.
