clinch > breather > lead blow seems intentional, though
or you could go full support clinch + overexert

Clinch is full body bind (which works with Breather) and Lead Blow is huge damage against fully bound targets.
They work together.

Bind Pugilist needs a lot of their skills which is both good and bad.
If you have a Celestrian just get their Union skill Chain Blast and wait on Clinch.

I'm still racking my brain to put together the best elemental Chain team possible, and I think that I'm unfortunately going to break my rule not to bring duplicates of a class in my first playthrough.

Currently, I've got Chain Fencer/Dodge Fencer/1Kat // Damage Shaman / Herb Botanist.
This means that I won't be overcapped on debuffs on my opponents unless I use Phantom Swords, and I won't be overcapped on buffs on my allies so long as my Shaman moves first to cast their elemental prayer, which then allows the prayer to drop off.

Should I be Earthlain for higher luck for Optic Thrust? Will it make a noticeable difference with the botanist's Blind Smoke?

Just weave between the thing that activates the Chain you are using and the weakness of the enemy.
If they have no weakness, Firball deals the most damage. Second most damage is Icicle.

Get Spread Chant and Quick-Chant to increase damage especially on turns you use Fireball.

If you want to be a bit more on the support side you can try for arm binds or stuns (although most bosses have only a 10% chance to get stunned) or reduce INT-based damage by weaving the physical skills.
Still, never just spam one skill - mix them up.

Once you have enough skill points you might even go for Altar - just cast it when your Chain Fencer uses Chain Plus and hit as many weaknesses as possible.
