Newfag here, how do I deal with the AI's absurd skirmisher micro? Starting Lizardmen and the Skaven ranged units just run circles around my slow infantry while the rest of their units rally. I know auto-resolve favors me (Kroxigor got like 500 kills), but am I supposed to just be waiting to get the faster units/monsters?

I ran into some Skaven at the end of my HE campaign, it was less noticeable since there were several ways to shut them down. The poison was still incredibly annoying though, maybe there's something I'm missing to minimize casualties.

You have to spread wide and push them into a corner, ideally into a wooded area. Use your fast lads to take care of stragglers and flankers

you can use cold ones but they are atrociously slow, although still faster than skaven

best you can do is shoot them back or wrangle them into a corner. Get some skink skirmishers and lead them around. Poison will slow them down
Get access to cold one cavalry or terradon riders as soon as you can if it's really bugging you

Not that guy, but Lizardmen don't get cav till late game Kroq doesn't have magic (he needs Skink Priests and those are kinda mid-game if you are outside of your capital), and Lizardmen don't really have skirmishers. Their skinks aren't all that fast, and definitely won't catch up to skirmishing rats. What he needs is Pteradons and Triceratops.

There's nothing unloreful about Stormvermin with sword and board; you'd be surprised how many weapon options many units have, and how many weren't included by CA.

Sword and shields are much more defensive, and the majority on this board will tell you that is automatically inferior since damage > all. I think they're perfect for taking on missile-heavy enemies and storming the walls in a settlement fight.

I mostly built my army thematically around whatever name the lords got. It gave me a reason to recruit beyond the eternal darkshards, and was fun.

Executioners are great for flanking during hammer and anvil maneuvers. They do a shit load of damage when they crush enemy units between BG and them. Shades can reasonably defend themselves and they have almost as good range by default as Darkshards, and even better (by a lot) if you get Stingdart as a Name of Power for your lords. I use Darkshard shields with Malekith though because he can't take a name. Hydras are awesome, they wreck shit house and their fire allows them to do damage to faggots in the sky which is nothing to turn your nose up at considering how much damage they do. BG are good, I wish they were better though - it sucks to seem them get cut down by Swords of Ioreth. This is actually why people suggest Executioners sometimes instead of BG, Executioners massive buffs once procc'd let them nuke people. Bolt Throwers are excellent.

Their cavalry isn't great, but it's still adequate and their mounted cavalry is great to augment a flanking force to tie up artillery, regular cav, and ranged infantry.

The only units I found to be mostly useless were Bleakswords, Black Corsairs, and their tier 1/2 shock cav. I would use Harpies more if it wasn't for the fact that you're fighting other DE and HElf factions the whole game basically.

Is there a mod that super buffes lords and heroes? I just had this random idea that it would be kinda cool to field only lords and heroes and go on adventure through the world as they fight thousands and thousands of enemies on their own.

I've no idea how you could buff them so much but still keep some semblance of balance or challenge though.

Children of the Horned Rat: A guide to Skaven page 72. A book written for the warhammer RPG. If you do not consider that canon then the army book only mentions them being outfitted with the beast gear of war in the clan's armoury, nowhere does it say they exclusively use Halberds.
The reason they didn't use swords and shields on the tabletop is quite obvious though, GW didn't want them to directly replace clanrats.

While I admit it's not a "lore" requirement, I'm so uses to my Halberd Horde that shields just don't feel the same. It makes the Stormvermin look like big clanrats.

I get that CA would never be able to write an AI capable of setting up ambushes, but it's still super unsatisfying to get ambushed by an enemy when your army is standing completely still when they can't model it in any other way than being out for a stroll
