S1 had a literal coin flip system is you each won the first map to decide who would get to attack, once. It was shit
S2 was Beyblade (Death Blossom+Nanospeed+Speed boost=Hilarious meta for a bit)
S3 was the Triple/Quadruple tank meta, where that Tanks took enough damage for Ana to build ult, at which point hey snowballed and won. Large healthpools and prenerfHog also added on.
S4 was the death of tritank. Ana got bonked by the nerf hammer into obscurity, and Hog got neutered, meaning that a one hero limit version of the beta meta-2 tracer 2 winston 2 lucio- came in and it came in hard. Dive took dominance. They rely on their high DPS, ridiculous mobility and lack of any counter (especially after the Hog nerfs) to shred anything before them.
S5 was when it got stale and toxic. Dive was getting boring and there was a community shift based on the in-game toxicity. The report feature was added, but bar that the meta has not really changed since.
S6 is the land of Mercy. Make no mistake, Dive is still the absolute meta-but now Mercy replaces Zen or the third DPS. She has nigh 100% pickrate across all tiers. Brokenly good, throwing if you don't pick her.

Mccree was always a good character, it's just that he was super weak to DM and being dived, now that those aren't as powerful he can thrive.
Deadeye is also one of only real counters to Valkyrie and Mccree is one of the few characters that can even touch Mercy while she's ulting.

I remember the game evolve had a system where you there always had to be one of every role (you put in a preference for which you wanted and matchmaking decided if you go it or not). Would a system like that work for overwatch?
He is better used as a backline protector peeling his supports with his punch/skills instead of diving into the enemy team. At least that's how he was used in pro matches for the little time he got to be used before nerfed to Oblivion. Also to answer your question dive will stop being the best meta whenever Mei/Torb/Symmetra i.e. defense heroes stop being meme picks. This will hopefully never happen because imagine having to play every game against a strong Mei or Torb.

LoL has that system as well, but it wouldn't work for Overwatch because it's supposed to be a game about switching heroes. Also because DPS players would wait literally 10+ minutes to find a game while healers would get instant matches.
The whole problem could be solved by making every hero at least somewhat balanced and interesting to play but that will never happen. Blizzard will continue forcing literally braindead characters like Mercy into the meta and there's nothing we can do about it.

There honestly isn't one any more. Roadhog worked because he could delete any member of Dive and the rest would crumble from that, but now Mercy can rez every 30 seconds Dive could ignore their loss and carry on shredding, with the same amount of momentum they rely on.
Honestly, we need a heavily zoning/knockback based tank. A long range knockback focused tank (minimal damage) which can survive being dived on for 5 seconds is what's needed. Rein and Orisa can't outdamage or outmanoeuvre Dive, Zarya and Hog can't protect the team in general, Winston and D.Va are dive itself. The problem isn't as easy as 'counter' dive, otherwise Doomfist would have been what we needed. However at this point we need a new healer more for the health of the game in general.
So user which bullet do you take? The one labelled 'same meta for 6 months in a row' or the one labelled 'since launch only 4 mandatory healers, of which 3 are viable'
