So my headcannon for Sonic Mania is that after the events of generations, heading back to the past, Classic Eggman scraps all of his Future plans for a new roster after seeing that he's going to repeatedly fail time and time again in the future. (Hard boiled heavies, using the Death EggRobot at the beginning, etc.) I don't know how this leads to modern Eggman taking over the world (Other than the Phantom Ruby) but this seems to make the most sense.
Is there anything that conflicts with this theory or could it make sense?

Everyone knows, for example, Amy Rose IS in fact, a long lost relative of Sonic and no one mentions it? Why? CONSPIRACY. It did, but it has to take place after it. Shadow was a one-and-done deal. He dies in it, so it can't take place during that game or after it. It can't take place after Heroes since he knows who Maria is, yet doesn't in Shadow. So the only place it can fit is after Shadow.

Considering the two year gap in dev cycles, I don't buy it.

It depends on whatever personality Graff is gonna decide she has this game, considering since Generations her personality has had absolutely no fucking consistency whatsoever

There's nothing saying either way if he did, but you're probably thinking about how at the end of the last story he tossed that picture and said goodbye. He was just turning his back on the past and focusing on the present/future from there on out. If he got his memories then cool, if not then no big deal.

How about this for a fan fic?

Eggman has come up with the ULTIMATE Master Plan to defeat Sonic. If Sonic is the Embodiment of Chaos, then he'll use the power of chaos against his very existence!

This, with Nega's help, after the usual adventure, Eggman traps Super Sonic and all his friends, and drains the energies of the Chaos, Sol, and Master Emeralds among other things right out of them, until nothing is left. But then, out of nowhere, Metal Sonic and Eggman Nega push Eggman into that trap as well! What Eggman didn't account for, was that he is caught up in those chaotic forces just as much as Sonic andthe others, and now he's been betrayed by his own descendent.

Then, Eggman Nega activates the machine, and the extracted mystical energies create a Hyper Genesis Wave, rewriting reality to remove Sonic, Eggman, and the others entirely, trapping them somewhere where they'll have no memory or power.

But... meanwhile, in a different reality on the other side of the Omniverse altogether... on one of a small set of islands just off the east coast of the U.S., there's a science-research facility. There, scientists are conducting experiments to generate "Pure Energy",and a High School holds a field trip to the labs. But what no one accounted for, was a 15-year old student, with spiky hair and a blue spiked Sonic hat, to run around the facility, and find the central core Pure Energy Engine, and ignoring all the warning signs, push the big red button. The machine activates, locking the teen inside, and he's directly bombarded with a pure type of energy that flows throughout all of existence, the ethereal power that created reality itself. The energy explodes outward in a massive Blast field that shockwaves across reality itself, and several other students are caught in other accidents across the facility.

These two reality-shaking events lock on to each other, and the affected individuals exchange universes.
