Mughal is the Persian pronunciation of "Mongol", and they were one of the 3 big Islamic gunpowder empires. Despite being the successors of the Timurids, its rulers were renown for being relatively tolerant of different religious beliefs (as evidence with Hinduism having survived in India). They were probably the best thing that could have happened to India.

Mughals, like so many other empires were driven by an imperial ideology that would bend for the sake of politics. Many people(here on this especially) would try to make a case that they are are the true ancestors of Pakistan, nothing to do with India, foreigners, or people who were able to subjugate the populace through force and committed terrible atrocities on Hindus and other political minorities. However, this is not true. As all empires they were self indulgent and made shrines to themselves in the form of tombs, forts and cities, mosques and at times temples.
The first two were often named after themselves to sell the idea of a grand imperial machinery and the latter, mosques and temples were done for apeasment and to legitimise their rule.
It is also to be noted that many of the leading Hindus were not relegated to the sidelines but became co conspirators in this imperial project. However, military posts were rarely given to Hindus but the same cannot be said of the finances and treasury of the state as the bulk of the bureaucracy came to be in the hands of the Hindus.
As far as socio economic policies, Islam came to be a state religion but during the rule of Akbar a reign of semi secularism was established. He greatly encouraged discussions on the issues of religion and his court boasted not only of Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims but also Christians and Jews. He established "sul-e-kul" or universal religion. He also was a patron of sufis and took keen interest in the bhakti movement. His rule was a long one and accomplished a lot many things and was able to establish a sort of pax mughlai in which religious tolerance was at a all time high. Jahangir(his son) and shahjahan( his grandson) were both inept rulers. Both spent all their energies towards arts and building cities and rarely emerged from the harem. Both were also famous drunkards and keen users of hash.
Shahjahans son Aurangzeb is were things get murky.

Aurangzeb ascended Tue throne by killing all his brothers, especially shahjahan's favourite and heir apparent, dara shukoh. Dara shukoh was a charismatic personality and an intellectual. He knew six languages and English was one of them! He wanted greater trade with the British who had started showing up the coast. What he was bad at was warfare and was killed when one of the strongest generals( a Hindu raja who gave up his suzerainty to accept shahjahan as his emperor in return his sawar or military rank be raised) betrayed dara shukoh to Aurangzeb who was realizing his sharia state in India would not be much of a success if he sidelined Hindu rajas.
Aurangzeb's rule is fraught with controversies as he was at times very puritanical in his approach to Islam. This can be seen in the backdrop that his father and grandfather had squandered away their wealth on "sins", he was brutal and strict because he was to keep a bankrupted kingdom together and many regional powers had also come to the forefront mainly from the deccan. One was the Bijapur Golconda Alliance while the other was the maratha Confederacy. The former was Muslim while the latter was Hindu. After a string of defeats, the Bijapur Golconda came in cahoots with the Marathas against Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb waged a bloody war for the rest of his life making bankrupted state further crippled with war expense and his authoritarian self rule led to no other great mughal ruler being produced. On his deathbed he defeated the Marathas but his death provoked further war of successions and emperors would drop dead within 2-4 years within the next hundred years 22 emperors came and went and even some interim councils and regents.
What also happened was the rise of regional rulers who never declared independence but made the mughal ruler a nominal, figurehead authority.
Theses conditions became a fertile ground for foreign invasions. First Nader shah, French and British then some Dutch and more British.

On the question of ethnicity they were turks. Descends from a Uzbeki/Tajik(?) guy called Tamar the lame(Tamerlane).
They drew from mongols through their female line. Fun fact: they hated being called mughals as they saw the mongols as barbarians and nomads. Through inter marriages they were a mix of Irani and North Indian people( especially with the Punjab and thar).
As it happens in many societies the light skinned Muslims and hindus (relatively few) became the bulwark of their administration. In them were the countless other ethnicities of Punjabi, Afghani, Irani and other central Asians. Turks were also common.and also the rajputs though they came on the bandwagon during first half of Akbar s rule.
