The empire was at that point much poorer than Renaissance Italy and ever poorer than the medieval northern European states. It literally consisted mostly of Constantinople and a mostly collection of Greek territories, by the end the richest city in the empire was arguably located in Morea. Constantinople was a city that looked more like a condensed collection of villages behind the Theodosian walls when the Ottomans conquered it
