To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Tales of Maj'Eyal. The gameplay is extremely difficult, and without a solid grasp of MMO combat most of the players will be oneshot by their first rare. There’s also Hogulus’s fantastic lore, which is deftly woven into his writing- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Something Awful posts, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the gameplay, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Tales of Maj'Eyal truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in DarkGod’s existential catchphrase “Hello my minions :^),” which itself is a cryptic reference to the epic Despicable Me 2. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Darren Grey's genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. :joy:

Sil. PCB is mostly like that too though. Generally really easy early game for every class/race, spikes in difficulty quite a lot around the middle, gets easy again in the beginning of the later part of the game, and then gets spikes in the end due to a lot of bullshit.

Going through 90% of the game uncrowned and off-alignment is NOT fun, especially for final descent and Drakon fight

Neutral hates Chaos AND Order. Chaos and Order are both bad fucking news. Order just wants to erase everything and keep it perfectly dull and eventless - stasis. Chaos wants eternal change and horror with no regard to life or purpose - basically the Mythos write D&D.
Balance is the only force that means anything. Ultimate Balance Ends are the only 'true' ends as far as I care, and they're also some of the hardest. Winning one with a Farmer was goddamn blood on my hands and mouth good.

Troll monk of Zin here, cleared the crypts/tombs and did the Iron City. Got most resses, all that's left is the 3 hell branches and 4 pandemoniums. This is the first time I got so far after a few months of playing.
Never beat the game, should I just keep at it and try for a 15 rune run or call it quits and go for a safe win because I've never visited those branches before?
Nope a +4 wep is good until you have one with a better enchantment if its of the type you have skill in. A +0 wep is good enough for the entire D area. This wep was crap in my case even this early because my kung fu is far stronger. This is ignoring the relec, pain, yada yada because they're entirely irrelevant during the part of the game you would be using a +4 wep.
Just win so you know what its like to win. Then do extended next time.

Next time if you go for troll monk, consider going for statue form once you get to the extended, absurd exp gain parts. Trolls have the best/second best statue form. Its not really worth going for it any earlier because of trolls terrible apts for it but its reistances and AC help a ton at that point. You could also for far less get the ice armor spell for AC but by the time you want this extra defensive stuff you are drowning in exp anyways

Can someone tell me when it's a good idea to use status effects and debuffs instead of straight damage in DCSS? The only times it seems like those effects are worth it is when you're fighting really scary enemies, but those enemies inevitably have crazy resistances that make it a serious gamble even trying. Acid corrosion and drain seems like the only reliable and consistently useful debuffs.
A: When stabbing.
B: When the unique relies on magic.
C: When you are sure it will work.
Pretty much. Confusion is a massive damage boost for a stabber and makes mages do like 0 damages. The risk is something you just have to deal with as someone who decided to use wimpy ass magic instead of manly weapons
Charms (debuffs) are really useful against special kinds of enemies, especially for insects and some very dangerous uniques like sonya are vulnerable to them
If you see electric eel, orb spiders or even bees, just polymorph them and the thread is gone.

You should always apply debuff effects if the chance is over 50% for hex-like effects.
If your ability checks HD, you should use it on low HD, non-resistant monsters (dazzling spray, mephitic cloud).
If you are fighting a high AC monster, you should acid and/or apply misshapen(only reliable way to do this is with irradiate afaik).

The story is kinda bland, the paladin really gets over the fact that dragon has killed hundreds and has permanently crippled several other hundreds by destroying their homes and it really plays out as a "jerk leaves girl and nice guy passes buy and fucks her" stereotype

Err, and if the enemy will be crippled by it and is worth crippling. Confusion and Para are crippling. Polymorph can be crippling to low HD monsters. Slow is not crippling.
Good examples of para/conf targets: Ettin, Vault Sentinel/Warden/Convoker, big slime creatures, non-purple draconians with a class, death cobs. Just a few I could think of off-hand.
Just make sure to remember that standing beside big, confused melee guys as a spriggan is a bad idea.
