Yes, it's real. Burning Spears and Fury Swipes haven't been UAMs since 6.82 (late 2014)

historically it had four purposes
1) sustain/lifesteal for carries with UAM (no longer relevant since they are almost removed and you have shrines everywhere)
2) faster roshing (barely relevant since rosh became more dangerous and medallion give twice the the effect for half the cost)
3) megacreeps defense
4) lategame item for supports when you have bought everything else and have no idea where to spent 2k gold
so yeah, it's pretty awful item in current dota

You can win virtually any 1v1 duel with just an Armlet and BM, if not then something terribly wrong has happened or you're retarded and dueling the wrong people at the wrong time.

People always forget about the bonus damage. Vlads and Necrobook on Lycan can kill nearly anyone during his ult.

I was playing furion and I had killed their courier 5 times. Then all of the sudden they fucking bait me with the courier. I tp in to kill their courier and half their team stand there waiting. This is why I don't play 5 stack dota. It fucking sucks.

Undying is at least great the first 10 minutes of the game in the right line up. Spectre farms for 40 minutes to suck and lose late game.
