I don't know how it is on console but on PC pvp isn't unplayable.
It's still dominated by a few select guns of course, but you still have your chances even if you don't use the meta, ultimately it'll be your aim that will decide who win.
The biggest issue is being a team of rando being put up against a premade of sweaty autists, but that's an issue far from unique to this game.

How is this game compared to the first one? I had a bunch of fun for the first 6 months or so in Destiny so I was wondering whether I should wait or grab it now

I've heard people say this one is really bad but everyone also said that about the first

second verse, same as the first. mostly the same game, with a couple tweaks/new weapon types. if you liked the first one, no reason you shouldn't like this one. especially since there's a lot fewer loading screens (i.e you can go from a patrol straight back to the farm)

Story is disgustingly wasted potential. If you like grinding your testicles against a belt-sander like in the first one while getting personally fisted by the devs and having wads of spit from the new POC of power women Hawthorne spit in your eye during all this you'll love it!

I haven't played the first one, but this one is a standard loots hooter like borderlands and division.

The main question is like 6 to 14 hours ignoring 20 or 30 sub quests with storyling.
Then they have I think 15 missions for more story that's a bit harder.

They have public event which are short 3 to 7 minute things. Like 8 of those.

There's a lot to do desu.

I'd say it's worth the 60 usd.

Pve at a 8 hour a day thing can last about a week or two.
So a normal person, with normal habits and a social life as opposed to shut ins can easily gain a couple months.

They're not additive, 1.0 mill of the 2.2 players active yesterday played PVP, but I never said it was a thousand, I just posted the image you mentioned.

Why would you think that? I said 6.1 million is all accounts with at least one character. Not all accounts. A lot of D1 players moved on to PC with D2, or played D2 on console until the PC launch so they would have already been included in that tracked players number before the launch. The 300k people purely represents 300k accounts that had no character data attached to them finally creating one character. It is no indication of when the accounts were made.
To be fair, that second number you quoted just greentexted he had only 5 people in his tower, and bungie just said in the weekly update that the system was having trouble matching people in public instances so its very likely he was just saying the truth.

Their biggest mistake was taking out all the fun and making it a "stack or lose we want to be an e-sport (insert laughter here) so everything is balanced around that". Although new players won't know this and won't see an issue, but people coming back miss the better days.
