Rogue is the least like rogue because it IS rogue, and therefore can not be rogue.

Nonsense. Rogue is very much like Rogue, and it is Rogue. The one doesn't prevent the other.

How similar is DCSS monster spellcasting to player spellcasting? I want to figure out how much it'll impact my Orc Sorcerors and the necromancer unique if I try giving them platemail.
Lucas Ward
it won't impact them at all monsters have no fail chance (unless you hit them with antimagic brand) and they have no mana their ai randomly decides whether to attack, cast spell, or move, then it randomly chooses a spell from its spell list
Colton Ramirez
Makes sense. Thanks.
Jonathan Murphy
Bumping to remind everyone that I could get my old ass clueless dad to almost beat mibe. You should be ashamed.
Sebastian Gray
Why isn't there a /pol/ roguelike? Like a Nazi version of Liberal Crime Squad.
Justin Hill
>MDFi of Okawaru So what you are saying is that races, classes and abilities that are too powerful should be removed from the game?
Noah Gonzalez
Because rightwingers are terrible at any sort of art that involves even the tiniest bit of creativity. All "creative" rightwingers were schizos who just reproduced on paper/canvas what their insanity created.
Jacob Ward
I think there is a conservative crime squad, but even if there isn't, LCS is open source you know.
Daniel Diaz
The only thing righties are good at is memeing. It's winning them the culture war, but they don't get many points for style.
Carson Morgan
What roguelikes allow me to mass genocide other, inferior species?
Benjamin Rogers
All of them? Mass genocide of lesser species like orcs, kobolds, snapjaws or what have you are the norm.
Noah Miller
If a game doesn't let you slay massive quantities of creatures of other races then it very well may not be a roguelike.
Jeremiah Peterson
Ok cool. I'll try DCSS because it looks the most accessible.
Lincoln Foster
Okay, be careful sweetheart. :)
Jose Reed
Their memes are crude and vast majority of them is low quality. The only real reason they are winning the meme war is that they have way more memers.
If you want something right is really good at, it's propaganda. This is something both sides actually try, but left still hasn't managed to do well.

>reproduced on paper/canvas what their insanity created But that is creativity, is it not?
Joshua Brooks
I'd expect creativity to be more conscious and a skill, not something that you can substitute with insanity or drugs. A boring painter whose skills are entirely technical and who is basically a slower camera would still produce weird shit if he was given LSD. I wouldn't say it means LSD can give you creativity.
Daniel Powell
>noticing sacrifice >not noticing the MDFi
Ryder Martin
If the painting's good, I don't see why it should matter how it was made. I judge art on how it makes me feel, not its intended underlying meaning. Even the deeper-meaning folks usually see genuine passion as a positive thing, though. Like, you're saying that Lovecraft was essentially cheating. He was drawing on his own fear of niggers to better convey fear in his writing. Presumably, someone else could do the same with just a really good understanding of horror tropes, without ever having felt fear in his life. If you must consider one of these superior, why would it be the latter? Would the ideal artist feel nothing, and convey emotion in his work purely by understanding that emotion on a mechanical level? If two pieces of artwork were equally good, but one was made by a computer algorithm, would you consider it more authentic since the other artist was leaning on his inherent humanity?
Gavin Carter
I wouldn't call an algorithm creative, unless it can actually select the components by itself. A "creative algorithm" would need to understand (or pretend to) what will happen if you put things together. I wouldn't call Deepart creative - creativity comes from the human feeding it a porn pic and painting of Virgin Mary, because he knows the result will be hilarious and seemingly pretentious despite being vulgar and mundane.
For me, the creativity involves not just being the tool of expression, but controlling the "source" of this expression as well. Lovecraft dreamed up Cthulhu, but then also invented all sorts of lore around the character. His fear of niggers was an impulse and a source of poor prose, but the idea to reanimate dead niggers was his own.
So I'd say that to be creative, you need not just random chaos that makes you imagine things, but also the ability to say which ones are good. This is what separates creativity from RNG+rendering - the ability to weigh the RNG in the direction of things that "are good" by some measurement.
Alexander Bailey
>tfw rgl general is so dead the spooky skeletons dont even visit us Also I figured out all the actual fun abilities in Qud are on Espers and its terrible as a bump man game
Lincoln Campbell
Bump man is always boring, Qud at least has active abilities from skills and some interesting "potions" and grenades. Hybrid builds are also very viable in Qud, so you get some variety from there as well.
Michael Smith
you've never used axes then

in IVAN, how do I make the screen focus on me after every move?
Kayden Miller
In the end, it wasn't ToME that killed this general - it was refusal to accept ToME into your hearts.
Matthew Roberts
Can you describe ToME to me in terms of Spongebob Squarepants?
Isaac Young
Liberal Crime Squad is a satire of the self righteous left and people like this transguy:
Sorry, but you're confusing a redundant statement with a logically unsound statement because you're an idiot. It is not the case that A cannot be like A because it is A, it is merely the case that it would be tautological to state that A is like A. Its being tautological does not make it incorrect, though you assume it does because you're incapable of practicing logical thought and instead derive your idea of a proper logical construction from what you've heard other people say.
Blake Barnes
Axes let you get a skill that can let you dismember targets, which can get you extra equipment out of certain targets, like salthopper mandibles and so on. If you dismember someone's face you can wear it for an Ego boost. It can also let you get certain weapons that you can't otherwise, because if you dismember a laser turret's hand or whatever, it'll drop the laser rifle.
Isaac Ortiz
Damn I have no response to that

On a scale of Dreadmor to Tangledeep, where does Sword of the Stars: The Pit rate? Is the game notaroguelike or simply so shallow that it's not even worth joking about here?
Alexander Sanchez

Jordan Lopez
Looks like a paid roguelike to me. Not a necessarily good one either. Nice art though.
Jacob Ross
I played it like once, a long time ago, and thought it was really uninteresting.
Eli Morales
>Looks like a paid roguelike to me. Hence the comparison to Dreadmor and Tangledeep yes.
Anthony Bell
Hence the comment >looks like a paid roguelike to me. Maybe I should have been more specific and said looks like a typical paid roguelike to me.
Blake Jenkins
It doesn't rate on that scale in a meaningful way. So no.
Adam Reed
post you're current run, /rlg/ also, I'm in need of some advice. This is the furthest i've ever got in ToME4 and I really don't want to fuck it up. How do I not splat and regret the time i've put into this char? any advice for someone new to ToME4?
Sebastian Hall
I bought it and deeply regretted it. I didn't end up liking DoD but I put more time and effort into it than SoTS. DoD is much better. I haven't played tangledeep (yet)
Jordan Torres
I watched some Russian streamer play it a lot a long time ago. Looked tedious and boring. Also has progression shit across characters.
Samuel Richardson
>giving money to goons
Adam Ward
Kerberos used the last of their real-developer reputation to get enough money to keep on their artists, so it looks OK. As far as gameplay goes, it's from a (former) 4X developer, and nobody there knew anything about roguelike design.
Jacob Turner
Any tome players here? Trying rogue for the first time, what talent should I max first?
Noah Miller
There are many ways to build and play each class. Personally I prefer skipping the stealth entirely, as rogues ironically aren't very good at it. Charm mastery, medium/heavy armor, lethality and poison.
Nathaniel Allen

Rogue is one of the most varied classes in the game. Just try everything and see what you like. Poison and the thing with rogues brew are porbably the best trees, along with flurry

It's pretty fun, and definitely worth the $1 or how much you paid for it, but there's not much to it beyond that.

Alright, rlg, let's stop the dcss and roguelite circlejerk for a bit and get down to important topics: what's your favourite shitty nethack class?
Respond with your favourite shitty class from nethack, or your favourite class from a shitty version of nethack.
Hudson Morris

I'll go third. I've always had a soft spot for rogues. Chucking piles of daggers always seems like a plan, but I always die quicker than if I'm playing a valk or barbarian.

I've only played as a samurai in Nethack, I've also considered playing as a knight although it seems more complex than playing a samurai.
Joshua Gomez
Tourist duh Or if playing dnethack tourist incantifier for that sweet sweet spell aptitude
Wyatt Torres
okay. serious question. How do I get into Nethack? I've tried a couple times but the game seems intentionally dense. I've played hundreds of hours of poschengband and DCSS, and lots of other fun roguelikes, but i've never dedicated time to Nethack and I really want to. I own Vulture for Nethack on steam, but it doesn't seem ideal for learning the game and I prefer ASCII or tiles over an isometric grid. Help me out, /rlg/, I want to love this game which seems so beloved.

Luke Rodriguez
What game
James Baker
I recommend playing Nethack4 since it has some quality of life, stuff that regular Nethack doesn't have, like a better UI. It also has several tilesets to choose from which in my opinion are better than the regular Nethack tileset and if you want you can just play with ASCII.
Thomas Edwards
Play Nethack4, which removes much of the interface screws.
Read the wiki until you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the game, at which point it becomes easy.
