The 3.0 documentation is already better than 2.1, I can't say how newbie-friendly it is since I started with GM before but Godot is certainly the better option overall.

godot's 2 main faults is that it has no documentation and it's not really proven to be good by really stand-out games
if you're fine with being an early adopter that might have to deal with some nasty bugs and some documentation flaws, go for godot, otherwise gamemaker is a proven but flawed option

Yeah, Godot is an easy engine to learn and use. It's a bit harder than Gamemaker because it doesn't hold your hand as much. It has a lot of nice features built in.

Real talk, the game should have the main features (mostly multiplayer) and some levels ready by Demo Day 18.
I'll disappoint you a little but the game is going to have some problem solving and not just pure speed. Kind of like Portal, but less technically impressive.

Also Post Process into sine gives an instant halloween look.
