Progress! Finally implemented the laser beam in the new weapon system. Also re-implemented strafing, though I had to spend a lot of time working around Unity's fuckshit importing of the animations.
Now I'll make the beam itself look a bit more fancy, with particles and shit.

After that, I'll have to re-add all the weapons to the enemies, but it should be pretty quick.

It's mediocre, because I tried to do it mostly alone, so the art and story is garbo. I've only heard good things about the music and gameplay, though, which is the part I specialize in. Still, it's a fully fledged RPG that I developed, managed and published, even if it was mostly just to test the industry's waters. But anyway, I've learned my lesson and have assembled an actual specialized team to work on this next project.

Need a quick opinion here:

This guy is supposed to be scary but also intelligent. If you sneak through levels you can catch him reading books and performing alchemy.
He's also a magic user on the level of D&D's beholders, freezing you in place, confusing you (inverting your controls) and generally fucking with you.

Terrible question. Both are viable and merely sub genre's of the whole because of how they change the design and play of the games themselves.
You should play some of each and decide what kind you like the most and go from there.
