Dont think so, it does damage and an elemental burst though. You can knock a monster out with guard points

Because you are meant to go into axe when you have openings.
Look up what Guard Points are and how to use them, and look up the AED shortcuts. Anytime you go into an AED, you can hold back (the back of your character, in case your camera isn't behind you) and press X to just do a regular ED and not use your shield charge up (AED is the attack your axe does when the shield is red and you press X+A in axe mode).
