The main reason I don't play wow is because the loop of "work like a bitch for the best gear in the game, 5 months later new patch, higher itemlevels, the shit you worked so hard to get is now outclassed by catch-up gear handed to new players for free to get them started" is stupid as fuck.

I agree, the current paradigm of character progression is fucked. Blizzard has a real problem with power level management over time. But we have no idea what the classic servers will even be like at this point.

Vanilla progression is different though to everything that came after, There are items from Ragnaros the first raid. That will take you though Naxx, some are even best in slot for the entire vanilla content, but have extremely low drop rates. There are also random drop greens and quest/dungeon blues which are BiS until Naxx.

You also don't stop running previous raids either when a new one is released, you will be clearing Molten Core through the entire vanilla lifetime for Thunderfury's and Hand of Rags, running ZG every reset for the Heart of Hakkar for the world buff and Mounts, you will even be running Dungeons for raid buffs, supplies and materials for Enchants.

The gear progression in vanilla is one of its better qualities.

what do ya do?

Make a Hunter or Mage as your first character, something that is good for gold farming early into a servers life, use the profit to invest in boe mounts/future raid materials and then fund your "main" and level it easily with twink items and enchants
