It wouldn't be very engineery once the designing part is done though. Even if the engine had a way to simplify what a certain design could do (rather than just using a basic damage/defence template for each class), the gameplay would stay basically the same.

I want spengoes but with proper chode-style orbital mechanics, and a multiplayer mode where one guy runs the weapons (targeting solutions etc.), another does the craft engineer stuff (power distribution, shields, thrusters, hydrogen management), one for piloting, and one for direction of the crew. Can't tell y'all how much I've watched youtube stuff where people fly around in crafts with multiple cockpits, but the pilot always has to be twiddling thrusters and connectors and shit.
And I want it not to be written in fucking C#. Script it in bloody 6502 or something, limit every programmed module to 8k RAM plus some I/O.

Turrets are still useful for point defense though. Just make the missiles realistically powerful and they'll naturally be the main weapon of choice over trying to close in and use guns.

Dampeners can work relative to an object, like autopilot #4 in Warhead. Major problem with chode physics is interplanetary transfers taking fucking ages without fastforward, and how there's no straightforward way to reconcile that with multiple clients; so some kind of a wormhole witch space jump chaos drive would be required for longer distances.
