How does /vn/ feel about defined protagonists with a distinct personality (Rance, for example) VS. blank slates the player never gets to see much of outside of a few CG's?

I like them. Blank slates are boring as fuck.

Well, obviously self inserts are going to be less interesting. It's not really a fair comparison since they're supposed to be inoffensive and let you concentrate on the girls.

That being said, I still get incredibly bored of blank slates. I can overlook their dullness if it's just a moege but when a story tries to have some kind of actual plot they tend to drag everything down. And even moege never get above mediocre if they've got a blank slate protagonist.

Distinct personality is almost always better from a narrative standpoint. Blank slate is designed for the sake of immersion and as a result can't be particularly skilled, competent, or unique because most readers aren't any of those things. And because of that you get a lot of situations where the MC's go-to response is sheer retardation because a more productive response would alienate the reader.

I'll never understand the self-insert or immersion argument. Every time I'm playing something or reading a VN, I'll just assume the role of the main character. I don't need to literally think that I'm said character. Having a retarded bland MC doesn't help the argument either, because the choices they take are still not what I'd do so the self-insert doesn't even apply.

Most of the time people have trouble connecting with characters with distinct personalities because characters with distinct personalities usually have friends and aren't socially retarded, unlike most of the VN-playing world.

What does that have to do with anything? I can pick any character with an actual personality and it will be very different from mine. I can still enjoy the story from their point of view, as if it was role playing. I treat it the same way as any character, blank slates included. Are the other autists incapable of using their imagination?

Yes? Blank slates show up in nukige and moege more often than other genres. For nukige it's obvious that they just want to wank. For moege they want a saccharine distraction from everyday life, and having to put ones self in the shoes of a person with friends is a grim reminder of what they don't have.

I want to get into Chaos; series. Is Chaos;Head worth playing? Everyone says Chaos;Head Noah is superior, but I can see no way to play it in English except a partial android port.

They're right in the sense that if you want to make a visual novel for PC, it HAS to contain porn or otaku won't even look at it, this has been discussed by TADA or the Fata Morgana writer already, you need to compromise the story in order to force shitty H-scnes into the games, so it's really hard to write what you actually want.
in Japan PC is a "porn console" and it doesn't make sense making a game without it, so pretty much everyone is moving to tv consoles, and the West is retarded and it's copying this mentality for whatever reason.
