it has a lot to do with kronos having a rocky launch for the first 72 hours and the bugs being exposed by very popular streamers. they went to Nostalrius (an incredibly buggy server for its first 3 months) instead.
After that, it did only moderately well until Nostalrius closed, at which point it exploded in population until Valkyrie picked up the Nost core and access to the account database to restore characters from Nostalrius.
This was incredibly short lived (people within the first 10 hours only got their characters back or some shit) but enough die hards were willing to roll fresh as Kronos was somewhat advanced at that point (AQ war effort over with) and enough streamers were returning to Valkyrie's Elysium to pack it.

At this stage, Kronos is at the end of its life cycle. Naxx is out and done. The new fresh Kronos server is out in April or May. So there's your answer.

If you want to play then wait for Everyst to launch and see how bad it is. If it sucks then go Elysium.

Any tips for staying ahead of the zerg when classic hits? I'm nervous of getting stuck at the bottleneck in durotar for certain quests. Do you think it'd be better to grind out the starting area?

I want to play shaman so I'll probably have to quest until 30~, starting to mainly grind before that would take way too long..

I want to piss bottle my way to satyrs and grind them for that sweet sweet felcloth with no competition, as soon as possible

You will be ahead of 95% of the players with minimal effort. Don't worry too much.

Also the servers are guaranteed to crash at the start anyway

1) Hunters and warlocks kill mobs the fastest. Paladins and warlocks get free mounts, which lets them level faster. Hunters, druids, and shaman all have speed boosts. By virtue of class mechanics alone, warlocks are arguably the best class to stay ahead of the curve speed-wise, but hunters would do better Alliance-side on a PvP server;
2) Training mining or herbalism while leveling will be pointless when a server immediately launches, unless you're going to become a blacksmith / engineer / alchemist. There will be no 60s to purchase your mats. Leveling skinning by itself and selling it to the vendor is the easiest way to make money while leveling on a fresh server;
3) Follow a guide to the letter. Everyone else will be exploring Azeroth again after years of having Catazeroth. Did you know we've had destroyed Azeroth longer than we had Vanilla Azeroth?
4) Don't do dungeons, because it will make you dependent on other players.
5) Make sure you have two full weeks of free time. Take a vacation. Devote all your time and energy towards leveling your character. You can do this and still remain healthy if you take breaks and remember to eat and shower. If you have a life to interfere with your leveling, then you will level slower than others. Prepare your meals so you can get through two weeks without having to make anything yourself.

I grinded out a rogue on ely and had plenty of money for mount at 40 by virtue of pickpocketing/killing hundreds of yetis and getting a ton of rogue's diaries.. Also snapjaws gave decent cash for lvl 30~. I'm tempted to stray from the guides to grind snaps specifically for a few levels because their vendor loot is pretty good.

No, but skinning can be done by all classes and is guaranteed to always be at a high enough skill, unless you're doing something incredibly wrong. All classes can grind out a mount, especially rogues who grind on humanoids, but time spent earning money is time wasted on leveling.

Bind your best tagging ability to your mousewheel, get ahead early on.

TG and silverpine is enough to get to level 5 on explore alone, you just need enough to get past the hundreds of scrubs competing over very limited spawns in the starting sub-zone

I'll be playing with friends, think it'd be better to group up at durotar start and immediately leave to kill lvl 5~ mobs partied? We'll have 5 people, idk if it'd be better to go as 5 or 2/3

No level 5 mobs will wipe a party of level 1, you won't land any hits and they'll be crushing blows

just do a quick 30 minute explore/dead run to hillsbrad or ashenvale until you get to 5 then hearth back and level in mostly-quiet 5+ durotar etc

grinding is faster but not on day 1 because classic doesn't have scaling spawn rates or private mobs. You quest and grind only as fast as the server respawns mobs and at level 1 you and the thousand other level 1s are sharing the same mobs, you'll be stuck there for hours waiting for quest mobs to respawn and hoping to tag them first.

No no, I meant whether to explore as a group to level 2/3/4/5, then hearth back and start grinding mobs outside the zerg level range/area to get further ahead and start questing. What level to get to from exploration before we return and start killing

Level 5 is generally when most people move from the noob sub-zone to their starting zone's respective Razor Hill / Goldshire.

Only kind of refugee related volunteering I'd do would be going to the border to shoot them as they come.

As long as you don't have any real life obligations you can push ahead of the pack through brute force and after that it's easy to stay ahead. But expect to be playing at least 16 hours a day. It's also a good idea to do 30h+ on the launch day. After the initial push it really comes down to how much you can physically grind.

The original servers had a fraction of the population that Elysium and Nostalrius had. Your "glasses" arent even that tinted because there is no fucking offhours in this server due to EUrotrash and the chinks.

Six 20-minute naps every four hours, or four 30-minute naps every six hours.

how do you do that with hour long queues?

why don't private servers have a Chinese server and a Russian server where people can speak the language they speak in game 24/7?

What's the point of playing? No, seriously, what is the point of playing? To soothe the itch, to feed the addiction? There's no one on this server worth playing with, since the clique is firmly established. Shitposting in guildchat or on the Discord can be done better across all of Veeky Forums, without running a program to do so. There's no reward for getting to 60, just more time to waste. There's no experience to be relived, since 90% of the server are either farmers or bots. There's no real-life reward for getting BiS on a private server.
