I remember back in the day DEF was meaningless. Guess they fixed it after all the ridiculous 3 accessory builds that let people take ultra-low damage from superbosses.

Nah - armor is no longer weak like it used to be and it now does something.
And there is a quirk in the damage formula that makes the damage rise faster if ATK is quite a bit higher than DEF - which the missing 50-70 of DEF would do.

Yeah, with EOV they reworked armor completely.
Armor DEF is now jsut as strong as VIT and armor MDF is as strong as WIS.
And since MAT exists casters now need to keep their weapon up-to-date instead of just using the stick with the most INT (or TEC like it used to be).

They limited the number of accesories you could equip to 1, but equip DEF was still worthless.
Same for both Untolds.
Then came EO5 and made very point of equip DEF exactly as valuable as each point of VIT.
