Yes well it's not like being unable to join up wasn't his own fault. He couldn't outmaneuver the roman armies between him and his reinforcements, and he deliberately chose to put himself in a situation where reinforcements would have a hard time joining up. This is pretty much on the level of saying "had he not lost, he'd have won".
