I think it compares to Zelda II, I suppose.
If you are on the fence about playing, just do it. It's one of the better Mana games. After Legend of Mana, the series just goes downhill until Heroes of Mana (a RTS game), but with the bugs that that game has, it ends up being polarizing. I personally loved it.
Legend of Mana also has a great soundtrack, and a killer arrangement album came out not too long ago in Japan called "Promise", I think nyaa has it.

It's pierced because it has a giant hole going through it. Maybe from a giant laser.
