1) Don't pay attention to suit (color) or sequences, unless you have a striaght or a flush right off the bat (5 hearts, or 5-6-7-8-9, etc.. ). But this happens so rarely that you can just ignore that and just go with #2 :
2) If you have pairs, keep them all and discard everything else (never change a card that you have in double/triple/etc..)
3) If you don't have any pair+, keep the highest card you have and change the rest.

You can do that on autopilot and it's just about 100% optimal (say 99.5%).
