In your own words please give a brief summary of the cold war

That time when everyone was preparing for war but got blue-balled in the end.

It was a logical extension of the civil unrest fed by bomb-throwing anarchists and assorted extreme leftists in the late 19th, early 20th century which was briefly interrupted by the rise of fascism, which also provided the US government and intelligence agencies a very convenient valve to allow for cracking down internal social dissent and increased surveillance.

I've always found it strange that while both countries made huge nuclear arsenals, they both continued to make larger amounts of "conventional" weapons like tanks/helicopters/battleships/etc despite knowing that they'd be useless in a real nuclear exchange. Is that why people say that most of the military budget is just corporate welfare?

Nukes only prevent total war because of AMD. You can still fight conventional wars over little things with conventional weapons.
