I loved 2-4, because you can see how slowly affects the characters and even the gameplay (when you can't run anymore as Hajime).

not every game needs to be mastermind death = game-over, NDRV3's killing game seemed to have been quite automated, it'd have lend itself to a twist that breaks the franchise's traditions at a very fundamental level

I've always thought it would be interesting if a character found out who the mastermind was, killed them, and then assumed the role of the new mastermind for their own purposes. I think you could pull it off in a killing game format.

I always though a neat early twist was to have the mastermind reveal himself early on and survive most of the game and then killed by the main character.

There was said in first game that Hope's Peak was running a random draw each year, and the chosen student would be named as Ultimate Lucky Student. It explain two lucky students at the same school in two years.
