Grim Dawn is pretty good, and you should play it. But also play Path of Exile.

I tried playing PoE last season, but I fucked up my character and the thought of leveling another one up for 12 hours made me not want to. Also, all the starting builds say that they're not very reliable for end game, just getting gear/currency for the stronger one. How the fuck do people go through the story that many times?

Depends on what endgame is for you. Typically when people say that, they're meaning that you won't get to red maps without significant investment.
Since you're a Diablo player, let's compare it to Greater Rifts. It would be like if you saw a build for an absolute beginner and it said you won't make it to Greater Rift 100 with it. Does not being able to do that mean you shouldn't use it?
It doesn't matter in my opinion, because you probably won't make it that far when you're new anyway.

that depends on what you're doing, what you call hard, how well you've actually done what you're trying to do, how lucky you got with loot etc

I have a templar right now, but I really only use spells so Im lopsided towards spell damage. Ive probably got 70% of my points into spell and element damage, 20% into strength, and 10% into armor.
Im not above throwing spells at bosses from across the room
