But yeah there are definitely hundreds of thousands of Star Citizen backers with auroras who have never played the game in any state.
This is why it's so hard to pressure CIG to do anything, whales are stuck either they refund out and potentially lose their power structure or they suck it up and try not to succumb to marketing.
Most of them however just buy shit because they've reached that age in life where they have money they don't know what to do with.

There is a large difference between showing something in a scripted(-ish) stage demo and allowing the consumer access to it. Look no further than e3 (and I guess now PAX) for the past decade for evidence of that. Any number of corners can be count, any number of concessions can be accounted for, any number of blemishes can be steered away from for the 5 or so minutes its up on the stage screen in the hands of an in-company individual purposefully giving it the glam treatment.
