I get this is official, but I don’t get how Galaxy gets considered to be a 3D Land title. It has hubworlds, missions, etc. as opposed to the linear SMB3 style map.

I guess they consider it more linear then the open world sandbox games.

The argument was the game being a departure from previous Mario games in the series. Super Mario 64 was a breakthrough in Mario 3D. Super Mario Sunshine was Nintendo's way of giving us a Mario game with a mechanic that is enough to change the gameplay without changing the feel. Odyssey works the same way. Miyamoto was extremely proud of Galaxy, but did not think it changed much up in his original 3D design formula with combat being simplified to spinning or ground pounds and cap boxes being replaced by new shrooms. Personally I think Galaxy 2 was when he tried to put in that change with Yoshi, but that still was more of a stage-dependent addition rather than a permanent new mechanic.

I do agree though, Galaxy hooked me on par with 64 and Sunshine.

The 64/Sunshine/Odyssey formula is sandbox levels.

There were both. Look up someone playing Honeycomb or something. It is just a normal Mario level.
