Prior to links, cards like grinder golem, scapegoat, kizan+gateway, level eater, gofu, niddlefiber, really any sort of swarm card had a lot less application or it was more specific in its goal.
Note that these cards were not as problematic previously, if at all. Now you have a lot of cards which suddenly shifted categories and require bans/limits in order to function without fucking the game. The engines became relevant after the mechanic the mechanic was introduced, which points to incompetency of the design team.

Needlefiber didn't exist prior to links.

mahad and dmg are really bad, you could probably get away with chocolate if you really want to though. ive never needed high magician but illusion magician does come up, rest of the extra should just be rank 7 toolbox and links with galaxy tomahawk if you want to run that. this list is kinda old so i havent tried timaeus but it seems like it would be a bit bricky

What I meant to say is that the only effect that actually works on your turn is the negation. During your opponent's turn, it also gives double battle damage and can banish a card face-down.

So, on your turn, meaning it can only use its negation, it's a worse Toadally Awesome outside of some specific situations. And no one this side of the Pacific thinks Toadally is an asshole card outside of its name.
