2,3 and 4 had happiness and in 3 you basically needed buildings to pass city pop thresholds which meant 1 city challenge was much much harder.

the civ 3 happiness is nothing like the civ 6 "happiness". the primary limiter in that game was corruption.

Well Warhammer 1 is one of my favorite Total Wars it's just the campaign map is very blatantly shallow as fuck.

at some point you'd run into corruption so high that even with a courthouse you'd still get zero production. that's just not sustainable.
