Extended is a round type, because according to Exdav1, in the normal rounds in old ss13, rounds lasted like 30 minutes. There were traitors but the emergency shuttle would come no matter what, so traitors got 30 minutes to do what they needed too and fuck off.

Extended obviously by its name, extended the round to an hour. When the goones got ahold of the code they realized, that this was fucking dumb and removed it.

Extended is still around because its fun, it keeps security on the edge guessing, allows jobs like Geneticist, Roboticist, Botanist, ect. To get some high level shit they normally wouldnt get due to the rounds only being an hour long. It also is fun for the admins because they can bus anything they want and nobody will whine because their antag roll was ruined
