Varus was a Darkin sealed within a bow by some ancient Ionian warrior queen who personally ended the war and shattered the bridge between Runeterra and the Darkin World by using Varus himself. Varus is the Darkin bow, and the current junction between the 3 souls (Varus, Kai, the other guy). That part is just being explained better, the only real change is that now the guy who took up the bow is gay instead of being a family father. Everything else is old lore expanded.
