It creates the ILLUSION that it's combating gold spam. The reality is that it discourages other gold-selling companies that don't give a share of the profits to the developers from rolling on the server, while the ones on the "free gold" dole get to spam unmolested.

if all you pack is int / spirit gear while leveling, yeah. Any melee will rip you apart if they catch you napping. Keep cooking maxed, keep food buff up, take advantage of enchanters doing sta enchants while they level that skill, etc.
