So what's there to do now after hitting max rank? In the past you always just tried to max your mmr, you can still do that, but it seems less impactful and trying to reach the leaderboards is just entirely different beast with really far away and hard to track progress.

It is different. The fact that you cannot see others MMR ever, meaning it's much harder to estimate the meaning behind it, especially since all the MMR got squashed during the recalibrations, so there's at least briefly (and possibly long lasting) devaluation of the MMR self, as it is not nearly as easy of an indicator and goalpost of a progress since it is hidden and peoples rank doesn't really confirm their actual evaluation in the matchmaking system as rank just shows their highest kind-of MMR, not their current one. You really have hard time seeing where you are just based off of who you're matching with as different players with different ranks just simply have have different evaluations from what is being showed to you and after rank of Divine 5 it's really impossible to guess how much does the matchmaking system evaluate such person unless he's on the leaderboards, which is a pretty tiny minority.

I guess that it doesn't really matter, since you can always just look at your MMR and seee whether it's growing or decreasing, but since you nowadays don't really see/use MMR, that information just doesn't mean much as in the past you know what sorts of people have what sorts of MMR, that dimension now just ceases to exist. I mean MMR is just ELO, so it's not some value that's set in stone of how good you are, it's possibly shifting value that determines how well you do against other people of similar ELO values, so once you take away your estimation of ELO values you really stop caring about yours.
