If the gate should be open, try using it. The point where you can use it can be a bit tricky to find, try strafing left and right and spam F.

You can open it from the back because the gate closes like a door every time in OGSE, but you can only use it if it's supposed to be open.
If you broke the game sequence you probably won't be able to use it.
